Jesus Stories: The Healing of the Paralytic Man

When reaching out to our Muslim neighbors, it’s important to share Jesus stories, especially centered around His miracles and claims. Who was Jesus? What kind of life did he live and how did people’s lives change when they believed in his claims?

One of Jesus’ startling and powerful claims is found in Luke’s Injeel (gospel) where he heals the paralytic man (chapter five).

When friends of a paralytic man discover Jesus is teaching in a nearby house, they carry their friend on a stretcher to Jesus because they have heard stories of his healing power.

Shortly after they arrive at the house, the friends are dismayed to find the house brimming to capacity. But they are determined to find a way!

They carry their friend to the roof, remove the tiles, and lower him through the hole.

When Jesus sees this spectacle unfolding, he commends the sick man and his loving friends for their great faith.

He says to the paralytic, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” (v. 20)

Immediately, the Pharisees and teachers of the law begin whispering among themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (v. 21)

Jesus, discerning their thoughts, asks, “which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (v. 23 &24).

After making this declaration Jesus commands the sick man, “Take up your bed and walk.” (v.24)

Instantly, the paralytic man stands up, picks up his mat, and walks home praising God in full view of all the people present there. The paralytic man’s life is changed for eternity!

In this incident, we see Jesus’ power to heal, and his bold claim to forgive sins. The pharisees accuse Jesus of blasphemy or making himself equal with God. Jesus’ sinless life upon this earth and his ability to heal people of their physical, mental, and spiritual diseases further validate this claim.

When the paralytic man encounters Jesus, he gains both physical and spiritual healing. He can follow Jesus with his newfound mobility.

Our Muslim friends need to know these Jesus stories: His claims, miracles, and ultimately His power to deliver them from the greatest disease–the bondage of sin.

Will you share this Jesus story with one of your friend’s today so that they too may follow?
